A publication by Agência Brasil reveals that Bahia was the second state in number of deaths resulting from attacks on bank branches during 2012.

Eight deaths were recorded in municipalities in Bahia, second only to São Paulo, which had 15 cases. Across the country, 57 people died in incidents involving financial institutions.

The data comes from research conducted by the labor movement, in conjunction with the Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese).

According to the Banking Union in Bahia, the numbers indicate that banks' investments in security "are very low compared to their profitability."

According to Dieese, despite having pocketed R$ 35,8 billion between January and September 2012, the five largest financial organizations invested only R$ 2,2 billion in surveillance.
