Bahia 247 - The number of deaths from traffic accidents on Avenida Afrânio Peixoto, better known as Avenida Suburbana, fell by 60% in the first half of this year. This figure is compared to data from the same period in 2015 and was compiled by the Accidentology and Statistics sector of Transalvador.

The municipality's interventions on the avenue to increase traffic flow and safety, which began about ten months ago and were delivered to the public last week, are cited as the reason for the progress.

Until last year, the road was considered the most dangerous in the city, with 10 deaths recorded in the first six months, two of them pedestrians. In 2016, four people died in traffic accidents at the location, one of them on foot.

"We invested in electronic enforcement and horizontal and vertical signage, redesigned the entire road geometry, included a bike path segregated from the main one, and built 26 raised crosswalks for safer crossing," says Fabrizzio Muller, superintendent of Transalvador.

The overall number of traffic accidents also fell in the first half of the year. In 2015, there were 556, compared to 233 in 2016. As a result, the number of people injured was reduced, from 235 to 94.

New route

With an investment of R$ 29 million, the 14 km stretch of road was completely renovated, with new pavement and sidewalks, in addition to the city's largest bike path. The measure will benefit 190 buses and five thousand cars that circulate per hour on Av. Suburbana.

The interventions in the Suburbana area improved mobility, solving historical problems. The Largo do Luso square, in Plataforma, had its turnarounds moved to the section in front of São Bartolomeu Park and at the Gameleira gas station. Paripe benefited from the relocation of the bus stop and the new geometry of the neighborhood's roundabout.

Along the route, bus bays, new roundabouts, and U-turns were built, and changes were made to the road layout in locations such as Parque São Bartolomeu, Largo do Luso, Posto Gameleira, UPA de Escada, Bela Vista do Lobato, Baixa do Fiscal, and Paripe.
