Alagoas 247 - The Federal Police are carrying out, this Thursday morning (21), seven preventive arrest warrants in Pernambuco and one in Alagoas. Operation Avatar investigates prisoners suspected of commanding, from inside prisons, a gang of bank robbers.
Six targets of the operation are inmates currently held in units of the Pernambuco prison system. One of the warrants is being served in an Alagoas prison. The eighth warrant is against a person who is still at large.
The suspects will be taken to the Federal Police headquarters at Cais do Apolo, in downtown Recife. They are being transferred from the Barreto Campelo Penitentiary in Itamaracá, in Greater Recife, where they are already serving sentences. The Federal Police will charge them with bank robbery.
The investigations that resulted in Operation Avatar began in 2015. At the time, a gang of more than 10 members carried out several robberies at branches of Caixa Econômica Federal (CEF). Heavily armed, the thieves acted on Rua Treze de Maio, in Recife, on August 28 of that year, and in Rio Doce, in Olinda, in the Metropolitan Region, on October 1.
As they were preparing for another raid in Piranhas (AL), members of the group were identified. They had left cars parked near a residence in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Greater Recife. When approached on October 15, 2015, the suspects engaged in a confrontation with federal police officers.
From there, the investigation to identify the organization began. It was proven that a large number of its members were already in prison. More details will be released by the Federal Police later this morning.
