The São Paulo Assembly could force Afif's resignation.

The Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) is analyzing a request from Congressman Carlos Giannazi (PSOL) for the removal from office of the vice-governor, who recently assumed the position of minister in Dilma Rousseff's government; 48 out of 94 votes would be needed for him to leave the Alckmin administration.

The São Paulo Assembly could force Afif's resignation.

247 – The Constitution and Justice Committee of the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo will analyze the request for the removal from office of Vice-Governor Guilherme Afif Domingos (PSD), who recently also served as a minister under Dilma Rousseff.

Deputy Carlos Giannazi (PSOL), who authored the request, also suggests that the vice-governor be prosecuted for malfeasance, which would trigger an impeachment process. However, the president of the Assembly, Samuel Moreira (PSDB), did not accept this point.

If the committee decides to open proceedings against Afif, he will have five weeks to defend himself. He would need 48 out of 94 votes to lose his position.

According to Folha, aides to Governor Geraldo Alckmin (PSDB) say that he will not exert pressure on the deputies in his base to spare the vice-governor's mandate.

Elected on the same ticket in 2010, the relationship between the two has deteriorated over the past two years. The breaking point came in April 2011, when Alckmin dismissed Afif from the Secretariat of Economic Development because of his involvement in the founding of Gilberto Kassab's new party.

In 2012, Kassad's party moved closer and closer to Dilma's government, highlighting a definitive split with the PSDB.

After Serra's speech acknowledging Fernando Haddad's (PT) victory, Afif said internally that PSD and PSDB would follow different paths in São Paulo from then on.
