The Legislative Assembly of Ceará will hold a solemn session this Thursday (April 30th) to celebrate International Workers' Day, commemorated on May 1st. The event, which fulfills requests from PT (Workers' Party) deputies Elmano Freitas and Moisés Braz, will take place at 4 pm in the 13 de Maio Plenary Hall.

At the event, plaques will be presented to the president of the Federation of Workers, Employees and Female Employees in Commerce and Services of the State of Ceará (Fetrace), Elizeu Rodrigues Gomes; the lawyer for Social Movements, Antônio Pinheiro de Freitas; and the national secretary of labor relations of the Unified Workers' Central of Brazil (CUT), Maria das Graças Costa. Also to be honored are the president of the Association of Retired Commercial Employees of Fortaleza (Acap), José Nunes Passos, and representatives of the Unified Workers' Central of the State of Ceará (CUT/CE) and the Federation of Rural Workers, Farmers and Family Farmers of the State of Ceará (Fetraece).

For the proponents of the ceremony, "the date is significant because it pays a just and relevant tribute to the workers who, throughout the years and across history, have expanded and diversified their capacity to fight against all forms of injustice."

According to lawmakers, the history of Labor Day dates back to 1886 in the industrialized city of Chicago, in the United States. On May 1st of that year, thousands of workers took to the streets to demand better working conditions, including a reduction in the workday from thirteen to eight hours, with the demonstration resulting in arrests and deaths of workers.
