According to information from the State Secretariat for the Promotion of Peace (Sepaz), the disturbance began after an escape plan was thwarted by the monitors. In the early morning, three minors attempted to escape; later that morning, two more tried to jump over the walls but were unsuccessful. The remaining minors became enraged by the isolation of the five children and decided to rebel.
According to family members waiting for information outside, two dormitories were destroyed by the rebellious minors. Several cells were ransacked and some even broken into, at least according to the Sepaz press office.
This morning, some teenagers climbed onto the wall and made threats by throwing stones outside. Light fixtures were broken.
Military personnel from the Guard Police Battalion (BPGd) and the Special Police Operations Battalion (Bope) remained in front of the UIM, but were not authorized to act, since, according to Sepaz, the situation did not get out of control.
According to the press office, new furniture and personal items were purchased a week ago and are already available to the inmates.
