Alagoas247 - The president of the Human Rights Commission of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB-AL), Alagoas section, Ricardo Moraes, reported being threatened by a person who identified himself as a public security agent. The threat occurred this Thursday (24), through a phone call. The entity reported the fact to Governor Renan Filho, the Court of Justice and the Public Prosecutor's Office, while requesting personal protection from the Public Security Council of Alagoas (Conseg).

According to the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), the threat occurred via telephone after a member of the institution received, at the OAB headquarters in downtown Maceió, the mother of a teenager who reported assaults suffered by her son during the early morning of August 22nd inside his home. Following this, he gave an interview to a local television station to discuss the recent cases of violence registered in the state of Alagoas.

Immediately after the threat, Ricardo Moraes filed a police report at the General Police Station in Jacarecica. In the statement, the lawyer reported that he was on official business when he received a threatening phone call. The caller claimed to be a public security agent and said that the president of the commission "should stop his actions against military police officers. Otherwise, he would be buried alongside the criminals."

The person who made the call further added that he knew all the movements of the lawyer and his family, identifying his family relationship with a magistrate of the State.

In interview with Radio Gazeta On Thursday night, Ricardo Moraes stated that, within the Human Rights Commission, he has only acted institutionally to ensure that the laws are followed. "We are not acting against the police. We are acting institutionally and we want a thorough investigation into this threat. We will not be intimidated by this," said Ricardo.

He also emphasizes that the actions of bad police officers have generated even more violence. "We are receiving a series of complaints about the practices of bad police officers. I and all of society owe a debt and have all due respect to the good police officers, but the bad police officer, in turn, is often the cause of this violence that becomes a snowball effect. I hope this will be investigated. He will not intimidate the OAB," he stressed.

The threat came days after the Alagoas Bar Association (OAB Alagoas), through its commission, demanded a rigorous investigation into the deaths that occurred in a police confrontation at the Tabuleiro do Martins street market in Maceió. The OAB Alagoas will be taking all appropriate measures, as highlighted by the association's president, Fernanda Marinela.

"The institution has been closely monitoring, through the commission, all cases that violate human rights and will continue to act firmly, demanding that the authorities duly obey the legal order. The Order will not condone any type of violation by public agents and will not back down from its role, which is to defend society," said Fernanda Marinela.
