"He was taken to a hospital in Grenoble," said the director of the resort where Schumacher was staying, Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte, to RMC radio. "I don't know how serious the injury is," he added.
Later, French newspapers reported that the German pilot had suffered a head injury and fallen into a coma. According to the French newspaper Le Dauphine, he is in critical condition.
The 44-year-old driver left Formula 1 last year after three stints with Mercedes following his earlier retirement from Ferrari.
