Minas Agency - In an exclusive interview published in the yellow pages of this week's Veja magazine, the governor of Minas Gerais, Antonio Anastasia, discusses strategic and relevant issues for the country. The results of the Management Shock, the popular demonstrations that erupted in Brazil, and the issue of rising crime in the country are some of the topics addressed by the governor.

Anastasia is presented by Veja magazine as "responsible for coordinating the implementation of the Management Shock," a set of measures aimed at cutting expenses and optimizing the functioning of Minas Gerais' public administration. As a result, Anastasia emphasizes that today, Minas Gerais' indicators are the best in the country. "Minas Gerais' education indicators are now the best in Brazil. In health, we are in first place among the states of the Southeast region. We have improved physical infrastructure and economic diversity," he highlights.

The governor affirms that the greatest legacy of the innovative management model that began to be implemented in Minas Gerais in 2003 is the governance model, the recognition of meritocracy, the addition of a results-oriented policy, and the encouragement of good public servants and best practices. "This is our greatest legacy: showing how public administration can be serious, innovative, and efficient," emphasizes the governor.

The governor of Minas Gerais also emphasizes that public management is necessary for improving health, education, and security. "Without good management, even if we have more resources, it's not possible to provide good service," he comments in the interview with the magazine. To offer quality services, the governor believes it's necessary to discuss the states' debt to the federal government. "The state pays, pays, and the debt only increases. It's a common problem for mayors and governors of all parties. Nobody has any more money to invest," he explains.

Analysis of the demonstrations

When questioned about the protests that have been occurring throughout the country since the Confederations Cup in June of this year, Anastasia admits: "the protesters are right." According to the governor of Minas Gerais, public officials have been challenged to present new alternatives and provide better services. "The indignation is clear and justifiable," he adds.

Anastasia also highlighted the administrative measures being implemented by the Minas Gerais government, in line with the street protests, which will, among other things, reduce the number of secretariats and appointed positions, generating savings of R$ 1 billion. "The understanding should be that the more the government reduces the size of its structure, the more it can do for the citizen," she concluded.
