Amazon receives 238 proposals for its second headquarters.

(Reuters)- Amazon.com has received 238 proposals from cities and regions in North America to host its second headquarters, the online retailer said on Monday.

The competition to choose the city that will host the company's second headquarters was announced last month. Currently, the company's headquarters are located in Seattle, in the United States.

The world's largest online retailer said it will invest more than $5 billion and create up to 50 jobs for "Amazon HQ2." The deadline for submitting proposals was last Thursday.

The company said that 54 states, provinces, districts, and territories in the United States, Canada, and Mexico submitted proposals for the competition.

Some governments said this month they could offer billions of dollars in tax breaks to Amazon if any of their cities were chosen. New Jersey, for example, proposed billions of dollars in state and municipal tax credits if the retailer establishes its new headquarters in Newark and adheres to hiring commitments.

The company did not disclose the range of incentives offered in the proposals.

Other governments have adopted different tactics. The mayor of the American suburb of Stonecrest, Jason Lary, said his city would use 140 hectares of an industrial area to create a new city called Amazon. The retailer's CEO, Jeff Bezos, would be its eternal mayor, Lary said.

Amazon is expected to choose a city that will help it recruit better talent to remain competitive with rivals like Alphabet's Google.

The company said it will make a decision in 2018.
