Tocantins 247 - The mayor of Palmas, Carlos Amastha (PP), and the Extraordinary Municipal Secretary of Indigenous Games (Seji), Hector Valente Franco, are participating in the First World Conference on Indigenous Peoples, which is taking place this Monday, the 22nd, and Tuesday, the 23rd, at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The event is part of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, and the mayor and secretary will be taking the opportunity to promote the World Indigenous Games, which will take place in Palmas in June of next year.
According to Mayor Amastha, the World Games will be one of the most important events to take place in the city, and for this reason, its promotion is crucial, both to everyone involved and internationally. "This is the opportunity we have for the world to get to know us, and as we promised, we are involving all international organizations—the UN, the World Health Organization, the World Bank—in the realization of the Games," said Amastha.
Given the international reach of the event, the Conference is ideal for promoting it. The event will bring together 22 ethnic groups, 30 countries, and two thousand athletes in the capital city. With accommodations and facilities for the event, the city will feature a village to house the Brazilian ethnic groups, a digital oca (traditional indigenous dwelling), a food court with typical dishes, a cafeteria, an indigenous museum, and a craft fair, in addition to sports facilities such as a baseball field, an Olympic swimming pool, and an arena.
Conference
In New York, more than a thousand indigenous and non-indigenous delegates will have the opportunity to share their perspectives on realizing the rights of indigenous peoples, including continuing the objectives of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The World Conference should result in a concise, action-oriented document on the implementation of the rights of Indigenous Peoples and the promotion of internationally agreed development goals, and should be prepared by the President of the General Assembly based on open and inclusive consultation with Member States and Indigenous Peoples.
