Alckmin: "We will revoke the readjustment, returning to R$ 3"

SP247 - The mayor of São Paulo, Fernando Haddad (PT), and the state governor, Geraldo Alckmin (PSDB), announced a reduction in bus and Metro/CPTM train fares, the increase of which has led thousands of people to the streets of the capital since last week. "We will revoke the fare increase, returning to the original fare of R$ 3,00," announced Alckmin, speaking of a "great sacrifice." "We will have to cut investments, we will bear these costs, making adjustments, tightening our belts," the governor stated, emphasizing that "high-quality public transportation is a priority."

With this decision, the fare, currently at R$ 3,20, will return to R$ 3,00. The decision was made in response to increased protests against the high cost of bus, train, and subway tickets in the capital and the state. Around 17:40 PM, Haddad was already at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, the seat of the São Paulo state government, where he met with Alckmin. The location of the fare reduction announcement was surprising, as the responsibility for fare prices lies with the City Hall. In practice, Haddad increased the fare and Alckmin reduced it.

According to Haddad, the reduction "is a gesture of rapprochement, of openness, of understanding, of maintaining the spirit of democracy, of peaceful coexistence." "Now, with more responsibility, we will be in permanent dialogue with the population of São Paulo, with the sub-prefectures, so that the city's budget can be rethought in light of this new reality," said the mayor.
