The president of the Legislative Assembly of Bahia (ALBA), Deputy Marcelo Nilo (PDT), has said that "the House is in tune" with the popular demonstrations that have taken to the streets of Brazil for three weeks, but in practice...
A survey conducted by the newspaper Correio, based on data from the Assembly's Transparency Portal, reveals that in the first six months of this year alone, the 63 deputies from Bahia spent almost R$ 11 million on office expenses.
The funds are used to cover expenses such as lodging, transportation, telephone, and consulting services. It is worth noting that, in addition to those who live in Salvador, many other parliamentarians from the interior own properties in the capital.
It is also worth remembering that the amount spent does not include the payment of salaries for parliamentarians and advisors, nor expenses related to the infrastructure used in the House by each of the politicians.
According to data from the Assembly's Transparency Portal, a large portion of the money was used to fund advertising and companies or professionals specializing in research and technical work. The website does not provide information about the recipients of the public funds.
A report by Correio draws attention to the number of parliamentarians who used large sums of their office allowance in January, a period when the House goes into recess. In total, 40 deputies individually spent more than R$ 20 during the recess month, including costs for consulting, dissemination of their work, travel, and accommodation, even with the Legislative Assembly practically empty.
At the top of the ranking of parliamentarians who spent the most this year is state deputy Maria Luiza Barradas (PSD), ex-wife of former mayor João Henrique (PP), with a total of R$ 205.990.
Although the former first lady does not appear in the expense reports from January to April, she also holds the record for the largest installments paid, R$ 151.900 in May.
