Alagoas247 - Alagoas has lost 21.576 jobs in the last nine months, according to the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE). Data from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed (Caged), released this Wednesday (16), in Brasília, indicate that, although the state has recovered, in relation to August, in the generation of formal employment, it still suffers from a large number of layoffs and, compared to the same nine months of last year, there is a decrease of 5,87%.

Factors such as the ongoing crisis in the sugar and ethanol sector have contributed to the negative job creation rate in Alagoas. This is the belief of the Superintendent of Labor and Employment, Israel Lessa. He emphasizes that the number of layoffs in the mills should decrease in the coming months due to the sugarcane harvest, which is about to begin in many industries. The retail sector is also expected to boost hiring at the end of the year, during the peak season.

According to Caged, Alagoas generated 16.285 formal jobs (with signed work contracts) in September 2013, representing a 4,99% increase compared to the previous month. Of this total, the sector that hired the most was the manufacturing industry (which includes sugar mills), with a total of 13.962 jobs. This was followed by services, with 907 formal jobs; construction, with 589; commerce, with 583; agriculture, with 237; and public utility industrial services with 18 jobs created.

According to a survey by the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE), in the last 12 months (between September 2012 and September 2013), Alagoas lost 14.277 jobs. This number represents a reduction in formal employment of 3,96%.

“Unfortunately, Alagoas is going against the trend in the Northeast, where all other states are registering an increase in job creation throughout the year. This, of course, is caused by the crisis in the sugar and ethanol sector, which accounts for the majority of hiring here. The state government has not shown concern in generating jobs in other sectors to avoid precisely this reduction. A second alternative should be created,” commented the Superintendent of Labor and Employment.

According to Israel Lessa, one option for Alagoas would be to invest in the tourism industry. "The state has tourism potential, but the government doesn't exploit it. Tourism in Alagoas should be strong, but unfortunately, it isn't," he says.

The Caged (General Register of Employed and Unemployed Workers) released data showing the creation of 211.068 formal jobs in Brazil in September. This represents a 0,52% increase and, according to the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE), is a positive reaction in the formal labor market, marking the best September performance in the last three years.
