The published figures also reveal that Alagoas has the lowest life expectancy for men. In the state, the average longevity is 64,60 years. According to IBGE, in 2010, male mortality mainly affected young men aged between 20 and 24 years.
Alagoas247 - Data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), released this Friday (2), shows that Alagoas leads the country in infant mortality rate. The state has an average of 30,2 deaths of children under one year old for every 1.000 births. At the other extreme is Santa Catarina, with 9,2 deaths. The numbers refer to the 2010 Census.
The numbers recorded in Alagoas exceed the averages for Brazil and the Northeast region, which are 16,7 and 23 per 1.000 births, respectively. The number of deaths, however, is lower than the average recorded in 1980, the date used as a basis for comparison: 111,6 deaths.
In Brazil, the infant mortality rate fell by 75,8% between 1980 and 2010. In 1980, there were 69,1 deaths of children under 1 year old for every 1,000 live births. By 2010, the rate had dropped to 16,7 deaths, according to IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).
The figures released also reveal that Alagoas is the state with the lowest life expectancy for men. In the state, the average life expectancy is 64,60 years. According to IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), in 2010, male mortality mainly affected young men in the 20-24 age group.
However, there was an improvement in the overall life expectancy of the population – which includes both men and women. Comparing the years 1980 and 2010, the longevity index increased from 55,7 to 69,2 years.
The survey draws attention to the excess mortality rate among men, resulting from their greater exposure to deaths from external causes, such as homicides or traffic accidents.
