AL has the highest school dropout rate, says UNICEF.

Alagoas247 - The Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI) for education in Alagoas, at 0,52, is below the national average, according to the 2013 Human Development Atlas of Brazil, published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The highest dropout rates are in the early years of elementary school. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in 2010, 17,8% of students in this period dropped out of school. In the 1st and 2nd grades, about 20% of children did not return to classes. For students, the reasons for dropping out of school are varied: lack of teachers, books, school meals, poor school infrastructure, and violence in educational institutions.

According to data from the Ministry of Education, in 2011 in Alagoas, only 38,9% of 16-year-olds completed elementary school and only 33,7% of 19-year-olds completed high school. The national average is 64,9% and 51,1% respectively.

Thus, Alagoas has an illiteracy rate of 8,96% among young people aged 10 to 14, and 6,13% among those over 15 years old. In Brazil, the illiteracy rate is 1,9% and 8,6%, respectively.
