Launched in 2012, the Logistics Investment Program (PIL) aims to modernize transportation infrastructure, contributing to the resumption of economic growth. In the airport sector, the PIL, financed by the Civil Aviation Fund, seeks to expand infrastructure, improve service quality, bring more innovation and experience from international operators, encourage tourism, improve cargo transportation, and create new regional hubs.

Located near CE 178, the new Sobral airport will have a runway 1.800 m long and 2.400 m wide, allowing for the simultaneous landing of five large aircraft. The final analysis of the airport site will be completed within 90 days, moving to the bidding phase for the construction of the runway, passenger terminal, night lighting, and night parking apron. The new Sobral airport will serve the municipalities of the Northern Zone with an approximate population of 1,8 million inhabitants.
