Bahia 247 - Built in the 1970s along the railway line and which helped accelerate the growth of the region known as Subúrbio Ferroviário, Avenida Afrânio Peixoto, better known as Avenida Suburbana, was delivered renovated this Wednesday (22) by Mayor ACM Neto (DEM), who traveled the entire road from Baixa do Fiscal aboard the Salvador Bus.

The route also included a stop at Largo do Luso, in Plataforma – one of the points of greatest intervention for traffic improvement – and continued to Praça da Rotatória de Paripe.

"It's an avenue that integrates this populous region of the city and received an investment of approximately R$30 million, resulting in the implementation of the largest continuous linear bike path in the country, with 14km of extension, in addition to new paving, lighting and solutions for nine critical traffic points. Now the population will have a safer Suburbana area, as well as faster access to the city center," said ACM.

Investment and bike path

The works will benefit 190 buses and five thousand cars that circulate per hour on Avenida Suburbana, according to Semob (Secretariat of Mobility).

Lasting 10 months, the project's highlights include the longest linear bike path in Brazil, stretching 14 km and measuring 1 meter wide in each direction. The space for cyclists is located on both sides of the road and can be used by those heading towards the Paripe neighborhood, as well as those going towards the Uruguai neighborhood.

The city government also redistributed the width of the traffic lanes, which will now have two lanes, each 3,20 meters wide. In total, 39 tons of asphalt were needed to pave the suburban road, according to the city government.

The interventions include pavement resurfacing, horizontal and vertical signage, drainage, sidewalks, bike paths, relocation of urban equipment, landscaping, and painting of the central median with concrete restoration in several sections, as well as painting the curbs. To accommodate the new structures, 14 square meters of asphalt and 26 square meters of curbs were removed.

Other interventions

Among the changes implemented to try and reduce the number of traffic accidents is the installation of 11 raised crosswalks in each direction of the road, to support the 18 electronic speed enforcement devices with radar installed last year. These measures force drivers to reduce their speed on the avenue, decreasing the chances of accidents. At the beginning of the administration, in 2013, 23 traffic deaths were recorded on the Suburbana avenue; in subsequent years, the number of accidents decreased to 17.

Recreational equipment was also installed along Avenida Suburbana in the Uruguai, Lobato, and Paripe areas. Among them is a space set up for physical activity at the Paripe roundabout. Lobato is another neighborhood that benefited from the renovation/construction of new squares, receiving five new spaces. Three others were implemented in São Brás (Plataforma), one in Periperi, one in Plataforma, one in São João do Cabrito, and two in Mirantes de Periperi.

Lighting

Before the start of the works, Avenida Suburbana had already been equipped with new LED lighting, which is being installed in key areas of the city. Through the Municipal Secretariat of Public Order (Semop), the investment totaled R$2,3 million, and 660 new lamps were installed on 330 poles along the 14 kilometers of the avenue.
