Goiás247_ This Thursday’s session (11) at the City Council promises to be interesting. The bill authored by the Executive Branch that increases the IPTU and ITU tax rate in the Capital will be considered in its first vote. The matter was approved this Wednesday in the Constitution and Justice Committee and has strong rejection from society, opposition councilors and class entities.
The Commercial and Industrial Association of Goiás (Acieg) has been the most vocal in its fight against the price increase and has already warned that it will take legal action to block the increase, which the association considers abusive.
Acieg launched a campaign on its website: "Don't wait for the property tax bill to complain." The organization is calling on the general public to go to the City Council this Thursday at 9 am to put pressure on the councilors.
"Business owners, mobilize your friends, partners, employees, and associates to participate in the event to pressure the Chamber to vote against the increase. Go and bring your sign demonstrating your indignation," says the statement on the Acieg website.
The organization's president, Helenir Queiroz, was present at the first meeting of the CCJ (Committee on Constitution and Justice) on Tuesday and warned that council members need to be in tune with the interests of the population. "Society is against the IPTU (Property Tax) increase," said Helenir.
Mayor Paulo Garcia accepted two changes to the legislation. The first exempts properties with a market value of up to R$ 15 from paying the tax. The second reduces the adjustment from 37% to 25% in so-called special thoroughfares, which are the main commercial streets, such as avenues 85, T-4 and T-63.
