Accident involving student bus leaves 18 dead.

Eighteen people died and at least 18 others were injured, four of them seriously, when a bus carrying students from the University of Mogi das Cruzes to the northern coast of São Paulo overturned after hitting a rock; the causes that led the driver to lose control are still being investigated.

247, with Agência Brasil - Eighteen people died and at least 18 others were injured, four of them seriously, when a bus carrying students from the University of Mogi das Cruzes to the northern coast of São Paulo overturned at kilometer 84 of the Mogi-Bertioga Highway, shortly after hitting a rock.

According to the Fire Department, 15 people died at the scene of the accident, including the driver. 

The injured were taken to four hospitals: Bertioga Emergency Room (8); Santa Casa de Mogi das Cruzes (4); Boissucanga Emergency Room (4); Santo Amaro Hospital, in Guarujá (3).

The highway was closed until 7 am today (9). In addition to the firefighters, teams from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) and the Department of Roads (DER) helped in the rescue of the victims. The causes that led the driver to lose control of the vehicle will still be investigated.
