57% of prisoners in Alagoas are awaiting justice.

Gazetaweb - There is a cry stuck in the throats of thousands of incarcerated people awaiting a decision from the state Judiciary. These are the pre-trial detainees, or those awaiting trial, whose numbers in Alagoas are alarming. Official figures, according to the prison map of the Municipal Superintendence of Penitentiary Administration (Sgap) from last Wednesday, the 7th, show that the Alagoas prison system is currently responsible for 4.978 prisoners.

This total includes prisoners in open and semi-open regimes, as well as those in federal prisons. Prisoners in Alagoas state units total 3.103. The prison map shows that of this total, 1.792 (57%) are awaiting judicial decision. These are pretrial detainees, comprising 1.631 men and 161 women. Of the total number of male prisoners, including those in open and semi-open regimes and those outside the state, 56,18% have not yet been sentenced.

The violence against the rights of these people becomes even more glaring in relation to the number of women. Among the 200 female inmates there, 80,50% are awaiting trial, meaning that 161 incarcerated women have not been sentenced by the courts, compared to 35 convicted and another four imprisoned under security measures.
