247, with information from China Radio International (CRI) - The opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games was held at the National Stadium in the Chinese capital (known as the Bird's Nest) on Friday night (4). On the occasion, Chinese President Xi Jinping declared the opening of the sporting event.

During the splendid Opening Ceremony in the heart of the Chinese capital, thousands of athletes from around the world came together in a festival of ice and snow while fireworks lit up the night.

After taking on the form and colors of the Paralympic Games, the pyrotechnic display turned purple, in homage to WeThe15, a global campaign that aims to increase the visibility, inclusion, and accessibility of 1,2 billion people with disabilities worldwide.

These people represent 15% of the global population and, following a call for the world to commit to change, a group of actors – many of them with disabilities – portrayed precious moments of sharing side by side, from a visually impaired girl lighting a red lantern, to a family pursuing their dreams and an elderly man dancing with a boy.
