Reuters - Former soccer player Pelé, 82, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday for a reassessment of his chemotherapy treatment following the detection of a colon tumor and is in a room in stable clinical condition, said the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo in a medical bulletin released on Wednesday.

"Edson Arantes do Nascimento was admitted to the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital yesterday (29) for a reassessment of the chemotherapy treatment for the colon tumor identified in September 2021," the hospital said.

"Following a medical evaluation, the patient was taken to a regular room, without needing to be admitted to a semi-intensive care unit or ICU. The former player has full control of his vital functions and his clinical condition is stable," he added.

Earlier, the sports channel ESPN Brasil said on its website that Pelé had been hospitalized with swelling throughout his body, suffering from heart failure and mental confusion, and that he had stopped responding to chemotherapy.

Two of Pelé's daughters --Kelly Nascimento and Flavia Arantes do Nascimento-- posted on Instagram stating that their father was doing well and that the media had exaggerated reports about the football king's health.
