ARDS is a type of respiratory failure that can result from various diseases – infectious or not – such as pneumonia, infection in another location, trauma, or pancreatitis, for example.

The condition causes fluid to accumulate in the lungs and reduces oxygen levels in the blood, according to infectious disease specialist Ana Helena Germoglio. "A large proportion of patients develop ARDS due to infectious conditions," says Ana Helena.
