Reuters French President Emmanuel Macron launched the 200-day countdown to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Monday, urging the French public to get more involved with sports as the country prepares to host the Games for the first time in 100 years.

"It's 200 days and it starts now. That's why we have a great national cause this year: sport," said Macron, posing next to a punching bag, with gloves on his shoulder and a little sweat on his forehead, in a video posted on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Sports in school. As you know, we've made 30 minutes of sports mandatory for all elementary school students, we've added more sports in high school, and I invite you all to practice at least 30 minutes of sports every day, hopefully more if you can."

Macron also highlighted other goals that France has set for the Games.

"France will host the most carbon-neutral Olympic and Paralympic Games in history, green Games that fulfill the Paris (climate) agreements," he said.

"We will host the Games with gender parity, with as many female athletes as male athletes. We will have some exceptional delegations of Olympic and Paralympic athletes and, hopefully, many French medals."

The Olympic Games will be held from July 26 to August 11, and the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8.

The medals will be revealed next month, and the athletes' village will be handed over on March 1st.
