RT Agency FIFA has ordered Russia to play matches on neutral territory and without fans as part of a series of measures in response to the military operation in Ukraine.

Russia will compete in any FIFA competition, which may include the 2022 Qatar World Cup in November and December, under the title 'Russian Football Union'.

The Russian flag and national anthem will also not be used in any match organized by the world football governing body.

The affected matches will likely begin with the World Cup playoff games in March, which were scheduled to be held in Moscow.

Russia is scheduled to play at home against Poland on March 24, with the winners facing the winners of a simultaneous semi-final between Sweden and the Czech Republic.

The national football federations of Poland and the two nations that Russia could have faced in the final have announced that they are unwilling to play against Valeri Karpin's team and have asked FIFA to intervene.

Shortly before FIFA's announcement, the Russian Football Union (RFU) said it saw no legal basis for cancelling the playoff matches, adding that it could give "all the necessary guarantees" Regarding security.

RFU also said it had not received any information from FIFA regarding the cancellation or postponement of the matches.

The president of the French Football Federation, Noel Le Graet, had previously suggested that he would not oppose Russia's exclusion from the World Cup, which will be the first edition of the tournament since Russia hosted the final in 2018.

FIFA's announcement comes at the end of a week in which several sports authorities announced sanctions against Russia.

Following an emergency meeting on Friday, UEFA announced that the Champions League final in May would be moved from St. Petersburg to Paris.

UEFA also told the Russian national team and clubs to play their competitions at neutral venues.

Russia came within minutes of automatically qualifying for the World Cup through the group stage. Only a late goal by Croatia against them in Zagreb put Karpin's team into the playoffs.
