247 - In a surprising move, tennis player Roger Federer announced his retirement from tennis on Thursday. The Swiss player published a letter explaining that, due to physical problems, he will no longer be able to continue.

"For my tennis family."

Of all the gifts tennis has given me, the greatest, without a doubt, have been the people I've met along the way: my friends, competitors, and most of the fans who have given their lives for the sport. Today I want to share some news with you all. As most of you know, the last three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I've worked hard to return at my best. But I also know that my body has capabilities and limits, and lately it has been giving me clear signs. I am 41 years old, I have played more than 1.500 matches in 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever dreamed. And I must acknowledge that it is time to end my competitive career.

"The Laver Cup next week will be my last ATP tournament. I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but not on the circuit or in the Grand Slams," said the 41-year-old Swiss player.
