Edmundo is accused of racism after comment about Lukaku.
The journalist criticized the former athlete for his comment that Lukaku "has physical strength, but lacks technique."
247 - Edmundo, former soccer player and commentator, participated in the broadcast of the Club World Cup final between Palmeiras and Chelsea and stated that the English team's center forward, Romelu Lukaku, "has physical strength, but lacks technique."
Journalist Renata Mendonça, a commentator for SporTV and columnist for Folha de S. Paulo, saw racism in Edmundo's comment. According to Renata Mendonça, the former athlete "doesn't know the football of one of the best center forwards in the world today" and "repeats a racist cliché that black players are physically strong, but cannot have the technique/intelligence to play".
Edmundo denied being racist and promised to sue the journalist. "She doesn't know me. My mother is black, my mother's whole family is black, my best friends are black. So, I had no idea of being racist as she implied. I think she was very unfortunate. But, with all due respect, I'm not going to argue with her. If a lawsuit is warranted, she will be sued. Otherwise, she can go on with her life, and I will go on with mine."
