"Lula's victory is essential to defeat fascism, but it is not enough," says Alysson Mascaro.

He argues that it is essential for the left to build a socialist horizon in Brazil.

247 - Professor and philosopher Alysson Mascaro, who recently published the book *Critique of Fascism* by Boitempo Editorial, stated in an interview with journalist Leonardo Attuch, editor of TV 247, that the victory of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is a decisive step, but not sufficient, to defeat fascism in Brazil. "Fascism is a phenomenon that stems from capitalism. Therefore, we can return to it at any moment," he stated. "The majority of the Brazilian bourgeoisie is engendering the extreme right in Brazil. The dynamic sectors of Brazilian capitalism, driven by agribusiness, are far-right. But a piece of Faria Lima [a wealthy financial district in São Paulo] has broken away. In any case, the financial market is still betting on Bolsonaro. The Brazilian bourgeoisie lives in the short term and sees the election as an opportunity to massacre the workers," he added.

Alysson said that, in the current context, winning the elections is fundamental. "We are in a hole and we could sink further. If we sink, the cost of getting out will be much higher. But the election alone is not enough. Our people are already being incited to be far-right and it is necessary to free our people from the clutches of fascism," he stated.

In the interview, he spoke about the case of the Bolsonaro supporter Roberto Jefferson, who attempted to assassinate federal police officers and yet received special treatment from the Brazilian government. "Roberto Jefferson was treated with kindness. If it were any other citizen, they would have been assassinated," he stated.
