Rodrigo Schüler: "Priests are being pressured to take a stand against Lula"
The priest who helped organize Lula's meeting with Catholic leaders believes the Church has taken "ten steps backward" by preaching Bolsonaro's rhetoric.
247 - The organizer of the meeting between former president Lula (PT) and Catholic leaders last Monday (18), Father Rodrigo Schüler told TV 247 that his peers are being pressured by Bolsonaro supporters to turn against the PT member.
“We are at a point where we have to dismantle these main arguments of the Bolsonaro supporters, which is what they always harp on, especially regarding the co-opting of the religious phenomenon, against abortion, this issue of gender ideology, drug legalization. It is because of this discourse that we are suffering in the churches. Many priests are being put against the wall to take a position,” he said.

"In reality, what they want is: 'Father, you have to say that we can't vote for Lula because Lula is pro-abortion, because Lula is in favor of drugs.' And it's a discourse that makes no sense. This scares us a lot," he added.
According to the priest, the Church has taken "ten steps backward" by preaching Bolsonaro's discourse in recent years, "especially on moral, ethical, and ecclesial issues." "All the renewal that Pope Francis brings us, it seems we are regressing with this ultra-conservative movement that is affecting our churches."
