"Lula 4 has to be more progressive than Lula 3," says José Genoino.
The former president of the Workers' Party (PT) believes that a potential new term will require profound reforms and addressing global crises.
247 - In interview with the program Eleven O'Clock RoundFormer PT (Workers' Party) national president José Genoino analyzed the challenges of a potential fourth term for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. According to him, it will not be possible to repeat the current model of government should the president run and win again in 2026.
According to Genoino, the global political and economic landscape necessitates a more profound shift. "Lula 4 has to be more progressive than Lula 3. It's the crisis itself that's pushing us toward progress," he stated.
International crisis and national sovereignty
Genoino highlighted that the government will need to confront structural issues that extend beyond domestic politics, such as the worsening climate crisis, geopolitical conflicts, and global economic instability. "The crisis has escalated, the crisis is deeper, the environmental crisis, the social crisis, the financial crisis, the geopolitical crisis, the crisis of American imperialism itself," he said.
For him, national sovereignty must be a central axis of the project. "Lula 4 is the people's agenda. Lula 4 is national sovereignty with consistent policies, with medium and long-term policies," he emphasized.
Democratic reforms as a priority
The former president of the PT (Workers' Party) also argued that a potential new term needs to implement transformations in the Brazilian political and institutional system. Among the points mentioned are changes in the Armed Forces, public security, and the National Congress. "Lula 4 will have to be more progressive. We can't have Lula 4 as if it were a repetition of Lula 3," he stated.
Genoino emphasized that the gravity of the current situation makes it impossible to govern without deepening structural reforms. "A 'Lula 4' only makes sense if it's more progressive than 'Lula 3'," he reinforced.
The relationship with the United States
Another topic addressed by the leader was foreign policy. Genoino was critical of Washington's stance and warned about the need for caution. "We shouldn't be under any illusions about American imperialism. It bites at the right time and tries to blow at other times," he declared.
According to him, Brazil needs to position itself independently to strengthen its leadership in Latin America.
José Genoino's speech reflects the assessment that Lula, should he confirm his candidacy in 2026, will have to present a bolder government program, focused on national sovereignty and addressing multiple global crises. "It is necessary to build a stronger system of alliances to contest the elections and, above all, to guarantee structural progress in the country," he concluded. Watch:
