"Lira is trying to bend Lula's government to a conservative majority in Congress, which is a real possibility," says Breno Altman.

Journalist assesses the stance of the Speaker of the House of Representatives as 'cynical': "He says he won't screw over the government, but that's exactly what he's threatening to do."

247 - The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), has taken on a clearer stance of dispute with the Lula (PT) government, according to journalist Breno Altman in an interview on the Bom Dia 247 program this Monday (1). According to Altman, this stance is cynical, since Lira does not present himself as the head of the opposition, but is threatening to "screw over the government", backed by a conservative Congress.

"In the interview Lira gave to the newspaper O Globo, he says something like this at one point: 'I'm not going to screw over the government'"But he's threatening exactly that; he's seeking to bend the government to a real conservative majority that exists in Congress. His statement on this is very explicit when he says that 'President Lula needs to understand that the elected Congress has a very different composition from the ideas that his government defends,'" the journalist analyzed.

>>> Renan calls Arthur Lira an "emperor" who threatens Lula's government.

According to Altman, Lira's attitude represents a political war in Congress and demands a reassessment of the government's strategy: "Lira wants to prevail over the main measures that concern the interests of the propertied classes, the agrarian and financial bourgeoisie... he clearly states that he will defend these interests. [...] He will establish resistance in Congress to any important measure that changes the country's economic landscape. So it's war there, and the government has to re-evaluate its strategy."
