Chico Alencar on the massacre in Rio: the massacre was the result of a 'political and electoral' action.

The PSOL congressman denounces that the mega-operation in the Complexo do Alemão and Penha repeats the "war on drugs" model that never yields results.

247 - Federal deputy Chico Alencar (PSol-RJ) rejected the massive police operation in Rio de Janeiro, which has resulted in over 100 deaths and dozens of injuries. In an interview, the congressman described the action as "irresponsible, lacking intelligence, lacking planning, and politically motivated," holding Governor Cláudio Castro (PL) responsible for the tragedy.

“This operation was political and electioneering. It was an action without strategy, without dialogue with other forces, and with disastrous results. The governor has low popularity and is trying to capitalize on the common belief that 'the only good criminal is a dead criminal',” said Chico Alencar in an interview with the program Brasil Agora, on TV 247.

According to the congressman, the operation was announced as a "declaration of war" on drug trafficking in the communities of Complexo do Alemão and Penha, regions where more than 200 people live. The offensive paralyzed the city and left a trail of fear and destruction.

“Five health units were closed, 28 schools in Alemão and 17 in Penha were without classes, and more than one hundred bus lines had their routes altered. Rio is experiencing a war-like scenario, a direct result of the irresponsibility of those who should guarantee security, not spread terror,” he said.

Alencar also disputed the statements made by the state Secretary of Security, Vitor Santos, who described the action as "necessary and planned."

"Necessary, yes, because territories cannot be allowed to fall under the control of drug traffickers or militias, but planned, thought out, intelligent? Not at all. If it were, there wouldn't be this absurd number of deaths," the congressman criticized.

According to the congressman, the central problem of public security in Rio de Janeiro is the absence of social and intelligence policies. He recalled that the federal government sent the Public Security Amendment to Congress, which provides for a national system of integration between police forces and preventive policies, but that it has been blocked by the right wing and the center.

"The right wing doesn't want to vote on the Security Amendment. They say the federal government will take power away from the states, but at the same time Cláudio Castro asks for help and blames Brasília. It's the cynicism and hypocrisy typical of a politics that thrives on rhetoric and corpses," he declared.

Chico Alencar also recalled the failure of past experiences, such as the UPPs (Pacifying Police Units), which began with a proposal for proximity and prevention, but were lost due to lack of continuity and corruption within the corporations themselves.

“Without social engagement, crime returns. After the mega-operation, everything goes back to the way it was before. There’s a lack of real public policy — education, culture, health, employment — and an abundance of bullets. This isn’t a security policy, it’s a policy of extermination,” he stated.

The congressman also lamented the discourse of a segment of society that applauds lethal operations, reinforced by far-right leaders and Bolsonaro's rhetoric.

"The population needs to understand that these operations only produce pain and outrage. Young, black, and poor people are being killed. As long as this logic prevails, nothing will change. We must confront the common sense and stupidity of those in power in the name of life and civilization."
