Enio Verri: "The Transition Amendment is a firefighter amendment, it's putting out fires."

A congressman involved in the negotiations to approve the text says that, without the proposal, there would be no basic resources to rebuild the country starting next year.

247 - In an interview with TV 247, federal deputy Enio Verri (PT-PR), who is participating in the negotiations of the Transition Amendment, said that the only way to cover government expenses and income distribution commitments – such as Bolsa Família – is by exceeding the spending cap. The congressman, however, emphasizes that it is necessary to discuss the duration of the amendment.

"It's a firefighter amendment, it's putting out fires," he summarized.

“This proposal – firstly – relaxes the spending cap and – secondly – opens up a budget space of R$ 105 billion. This amount is the result of the payment of the 'Auxílio Brasil' (Brazil Aid) program, worth only R$ 405, which Bolsonaro had foreseen. We created an exception in the spending cap of R$ 175 billion, something transparent and directly aimed at guaranteeing an absolutely inclusive social policy with a focus on income distribution, and at the same time, we opened up a space of R$ 105 billion in the budget that would serve precisely for the recovery of the 'Farmácia Popular' (Popular Pharmacy) program, for a real increase in the minimum wage, and to restore the capacity for some type of investment to recover the economy,” he pointed out.

According to Verri, the president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), in a meeting with the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD), in Egypt, where they are participating in COP27, defended the four-year validity period for the PEC.

“We advocate that a constitutional amendment like this be for an indefinite period. The Minister of the Civil House of the Bolsonaro government [Cid Nogueira], however, argues that it should only be for the year 2023. We still have this negotiation, this debate,” he concludes.
