"The mantle of the patriots has fallen, they have lost," says Zeca Dirceu.

247 - Federal deputy Zeca Dirceu (PT-PR) stated that the United States' tariff offensive under President Donald Trump, coupled with the actions of Jair Bolsonaro's allies, exposed a contradiction that, according to him, ended the narrative of the so-called "patriots." In an interview with the program Bom Dia, on TV 247, he focused his analysis on the political effect of this process.

"Bolsonaro and his group have repeatedly and often successfully told a lie: that they were patriots, that Brazil was above everything else." According to the congressman, recent measures and their economic effects disprove this narrative: "They proved, they themselves proved, that they are not patriots, that they don't care about Brazil, that they are willing to destroy agriculture, willing to destroy industry to save the Bolsonaro family's skin."

US tariff and political consequences

Zeca Dirceu linked the tightening of US tariffs — which affects different export chains — to a change in perception about the political group that presented itself as the guardian of the national interest. “So I think the mantle of the patriots has fallen, the flag, the t-shirt of the patriots has fallen and it will never return, because now we are going to start seeing the consequences of what they did.”

According to him, the pressure on sectors such as meat and timber has highlighted internal costs. In his assessment, these developments are likely to remain on the horizon for several months, even with government mitigation measures and decisions from Congress.

Exports and the battle over narratives

When discussing markets and the government's negotiating responses, the congressman again linked tariffs and political discourse. “…this reaction from Brazil to the attack by Bolsonaro and Trump against the national economy, against sovereignty, will also have this same context.” In the interview, he also described diplomatic efforts to restore trade flows and cited the need for legislative decisions to mitigate sectoral damage.

For Zeca Dirceu, the central dimension of the episode is symbolic and electoral: “They lost their greatest bastion, which was this lie that… [made them seem] patriotic.” In his view, the public interpretation of who benefited and who bore the costs of the tariffs altered the political landscape: “…there will be remnants in October, in November, in December, in January, we will be seeing problems resulting from what they did.”

Congress and agenda priorities

The congressman stated that Parliament should expedite votes considered relevant to economic recovery and rejected repeated obstruction tactics. Without addressing other items on the agenda, he linked the legislative priority to efforts to mitigate the effects of US tariff policy and, simultaneously, to the discursive dispute with the opposition.

"We're going to have people from the center-right who won't side with them in an action... of allying with another country to attack their own country, their own interests." Watch:
