247 - In an interview with the program Boa Noite 247, the jurist Pedro Serrano stated that the attempted coup led by former president Jair Bolsonaro "is overwhelmingly proven" and that the testimony of his former aide Mauro Cid is weak evidence. According to him, Bolsonaro's defense strategy is correct in trying to discredit the testimony, but it is not enough to weaken the robustness of the evidence gathered by the Federal Police and the Public Prosecutor's Office.

"If I were Bolsonaro's lawyer, there's no way to deny the materiality of the crime, because it's more than proven. It's nonsense. That's something for Bolsonaro's militants to talk against, crying about. But the reality is that the coup is proven. The attempted coup is undeniable," declared Serrano. He emphasized that Bolsonaro's main line of defense is to deny authorship of the crime and that, in this context, it makes sense to attack the plea bargain. "The plea bargain is weak. I've been saying this for a long time. This plea bargain is not solid," he pointed out.

Despite the weakness of Mauro Cid's collaboration, Serrano stressed that most of the evidence gathered against Bolsonaro and his allies "did not depend on this testimony" and "did not come through it." He even questioned the need for a plea bargain in the case: "What's the point of a plea bargain? It's not necessary."

The legal expert acknowledged the competence of Bolsonaro's defense team, saying they are "among the best lawyers." He believes it's important for the former president to have a qualified defense, as this will contribute to the legitimacy of any eventual conviction. "If he is convicted, demonstrating the quality of the defense will help in the perception that the conviction was correct," he stated.

Investigation into the financing of agribusiness sectors

Serrano also highlighted the importance of deepening investigations into the role of agribusiness sectors in financing the coup attempts. "The investigations are lacking. It would be better to investigate agribusiness, for example," he suggested. He emphasized that there is documentary evidence pointing to the involvement of large rural producers in the organization and financing of anti-democratic acts, including the blocking of highways and the invasion of the Three Powers on January 8, 2023.

"There are documents there, including some obtained from the press office, about the road closures and the operation itself on January 8th," he stated. He believes the Federal Police must be conducting investigations in this regard. "Something will come to light soon," he said, predicting that new allegations will surface.

Military personnel at the center of the investigations.

Another point addressed by Serrano was the involvement of military personnel in the attempted coup. He highlighted that the investigation has already reached key figures in the Armed Forces, such as former minister Braga Netto and General Augusto Heleno. "The Navy commander will be indicted or has already been indicted. And the generals there, all those who participated, Braga Netto, Heleno, the colonels, senior Army officers in general," he detailed.

For him, demanding more than has already been achieved in the investigation could be premature. "We are already doing something historic, a feat. I think that in this area concerning the military, things are going well," he stated, reinforcing that the focus should now be on other financiers of the coup, such as sectors of agribusiness.

Pedro Serrano's interview reinforces the seriousness of the evidence gathered against Bolsonaro and his allies, as well as the need to deepen investigations into the civilian financiers of the coup movement. While the former president's defense seeks to discredit Mauro Cid's testimony, the legal expert emphasizes that this strategy will hardly be enough to undermine the consistency of the investigations already underway.
