247 - Informality in entrepreneurship is a common reality among small businesses in Brazil, but this practice, while seemingly advantageous in the short term, can have serious financial and legal consequences. According to Claudionei Santa Lucia, an accountant at CSL Assessoria Contábil, the lack of a CNPJ (Brazilian tax identification number) not only hinders business growth but also exposes the entrepreneur to risks that could be avoided with regularization.

"Without a CNPJ (Brazilian tax ID), entrepreneurs cannot issue invoices, which makes it difficult to acquire new clients and limits growth opportunities," explains Santa Lucia. He also emphasizes that informality deprives entrepreneurs of essential social security benefits, such as retirement and sick pay, leaving them unprotected in unforeseen situations.

Another challenge faced by those operating in the informal sector is the difficulty in obtaining credit. According to the expert, banks and financial institutions tend to offer more advantageous conditions, such as reduced interest rates and flexible terms, to formalized businesses. "Without official registration, the entrepreneur loses access to credit lines that could be crucial for business expansion," says Santa Lucia.

To avoid these problems, the accountant recommends that small business owners consider safe and affordable alternatives, such as registering as a Micro Individual Entrepreneur (MEI). This option offers a simplified process and reduced costs, making it a viable choice for those who are starting out. "The MEI is an excellent alternative to regularize the situation. In addition, the entrepreneur gains access to social security benefits and can issue invoices, expanding their business possibilities," he emphasizes.

Santa Lucia emphasizes that formalization should not be seen as a cost, but rather as an investment in the security and growth of the company. "Having a CNPJ (Brazilian tax ID) brings credibility, allows access to better opportunities, and guarantees legal protection for the entrepreneur. Anyone who wants to build a solid and sustainable business needs to take this step," she reinforces.

For those who still have doubts about how to regularize their situation, the expert recommends seeking professional guidance. "Each business has its own particularities, and having a qualified accountant helps to choose the best tax option and avoid problems in the future," he concludes.
