Full support to Delcy Rodríguez and the Brazilian Foreign Ministry (Itamaraty) during the Venezuelan crisis.
Solidarity with the interim president of Venezuela and the actions of the Lula government reflect principled positions and correspond to national interests.
In the face of the most blatant and dangerous attack on international order in Latin America in recent decades, perpetrated by the United States through military action against Venezuela and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, the response of the Venezuelan leadership and Brazil's stance stand out in the contemporary international arena as demonstrations of lucidity, defense of values, and safeguarding of the fundamental norm of International Law: national sovereignty.
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez faces the Herculean task of ensuring the stability of a nation under direct aggression and, at the same time, embodies, in her first measures at the head of the Bolivarian Republic, the resistance of a people forged in the anti-imperialist struggle. Her warning to the international community sounded like a call to global conscience in the face of the persistence of colonial practices. Domestically, the pursuit of national unity, peace, and stability takes on a preventive character, aiming to contain the chaos sought by regressive forces attempting to justify further escalations. In the diplomatic field, her strategy proves effective in mobilizing the support of countries committed to international law, while pragmatically responding to the United States' offer of cooperation. Delcy Rodríguez's gestures toward this imperialist and aggressive country do not represent weakness, capitulation, or betrayal, but an expression of sovereign strength, based on the understanding that the normalization of relations and cooperation are only admissible within the non-negotiable framework of the self-determination of the Venezuelan people. This is the stance of someone who defends their nation without closing themselves off from the world, offering dialogue where before there were only bombs and illegality.
In this context of turbulence, the actions of President Lula, with the special advice of Celso Amorim, and of Itamaraty (the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs), under the experienced leadership of Chancellor Mauro Vieira, prove to be essentially just because they are anchored in a strategy faithful to the principles of International Law and the unwavering defense of Brazilian and Latin American sovereignty. Brazil reassumes, with the moral and political authority of one who has never engaged in neocolonial adventures, its historical role as a peacemaker and regional integrator. Lula's firm condemnation of the US attack reaffirms a conception of foreign policy that has non-intervention and respect for sovereignty as its central pillars. The phone calls to President Delcy Rodríguez go beyond mere diplomatic formality and express the reaffirmation of the bond between two sister nations, conveying an unequivocal message that Brazil will not abandon Venezuela in its most difficult moment.
On a strictly diplomatic level, the rapport between Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and his counterpart Yván Gil has allowed for the construction of concrete bridges of cooperation, of which the announcement of Brazilian assistance in the area of health is, to date, the most tangible and humanitarian example.
Brazil's actions advanced even further with the emergency convening of CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) and with telephone conversations about the Venezuelan crisis held with other heads of state and government, including Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez. This political stance of President Lula also found resonance in the United Nations Security Council, through the statement of Ambassador Sérgio Danese, who added Brazil's respected and coherent voice to those of other nations in defense of multilateralism, the political resolution of conflicts, and peace.
In this context, it is a political and ethical duty for all genuinely democratic, patriotic, progressive forces committed to peace to support the leadership of President Delcy Rodríguez and the diplomatic actions of Itamaraty (the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Any hesitation in this area does not constitute neutrality, but complicity with illegality and international crime. Similarly, empty, malicious criticism or direct attacks represent a disservice to the stability of the continent.
Supporting Delcy Rodríguez and the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) also means defending Brazilian national interests. Brazil will only achieve its strategic objectives in a peaceful, integrated, and cooperative South American geopolitical environment. A neighboring country that is violated, destabilized, and subjected to the yoke of foreign powers represents a direct threat to our security and to the project of sovereign development. The cynical attacks directed at Itamaraty, Lula, and the Venezuelan leadership, generally originating from the same sectors that applauded coups and interventions throughout history, constitute a true betrayal of the causes of peace, stability, and regional cooperation. Whether consciously or not, these discourses serve the hegemonic project that intends to once again transform the region into a backyard.
We reaffirm, with the utmost emphasis, our strong condemnation of the brutal violation of Venezuelan sovereignty and international law committed by the United States, an expression of a strategy of domination by this imperialist superpower. The path taken, in the current situation, by Delcy Rodríguez, Lula, and the Brazilian Foreign Ministry is the only viable one. Defending Venezuela today is defending, tomorrow, the right of Brazil and all peoples to a dignified existence as free, sovereign nations, masters of their own destinies.
The firmness of Caracas and the lucidity of Brasília, both underpinned by a realistic reading of the political landscape, represent two sides of the same coin: the hope for a finally sovereign Global South.
