Retail sales rise 0,8% in January, says IBGE.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Brazilian retail sales rose 0,8 percent in January compared to December and increased 0,6 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported on Friday.

A Reuters poll had expected sales to fall 0,5 percent in January compared to the previous month, according to the median of 20 projections that ranged from a 2,4 percent drop to a 1,1 percent increase.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, the median expectation of 19 projections was for a decline of 0,9 percent, ranging from a decline of 2,2 percent to an increase of 0,1 percent.
