Toucans discover the worker
The party wants to create a union base in Minas Gerais to get closer to the working class.
The PSDB will undergo a general restructuring to get closer to organized sectors of society. One of the measures, according to the party president, federal deputy Sérgio Guerra (PE), is to create a national PSDB union branch this year. Today, 93 union members from at least three union federations joined the party at the event to create the PSDB Union branch in Minas Gerais.
According to the congressman, the party will undergo a restructuring to bridge "the gap between party leadership and society." "We will create new secretariats and restructure existing ones in a model that we are finalizing now. This will consider all social forces. It will be a party connected to society. Not just a parliamentary party, but a pluralistic party," he stated.
Workers are one of the main targets of this opening. The PSDB president emphasized that, following the example of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, where the PSDB Sindical already exists, the party is in talks with union leaders in other states to establish the union branch in the second half of the year. According to Sérgio Guerra, the guidance to all party directorates is to "give workers a voice in party decisions."
Approximately 400 people attended the event for union members to join the PSDB party in Minas Gerais, including some of the party's main leaders, who took the opportunity to criticize the PT, historically linked to the labor movement. This was the case with Aécio Neves, who stated that the affiliation of the 93 union members shows that "there is no exclusivity of unions in relation to any project." "However great the government's efforts may have been, it has not managed to control the entire labor movement. A portion of it, yes. (But) we are clearly seeing that the labor movement is seeking other partners for its feelings, its anxieties, and its projects," the PSDB member emphasized.
According to the president of the Minas Gerais branch of the PSDB party, federal deputy Marcus Pestana, the outreach to workers aims to fill a "gap" in the party, which will maintain a "manifesto of adherence" for about 30 days to obtain new members. Yesterday, the group that joined the party is linked to Força Sindical, Nova Central Sindical, and União Geral dos Trabalhadores (UGT). "Not only the PSDB, but all parties, throughout the world, need to understand the new reality. The contemporary world is very fragmented. There are multiple interests," the parliamentarian justified.
