247 - The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, stated this Wednesday (25) that the electricity sector tariff could fall by 26% in December 2027 with the opening of the free energy market to all consumers. This is what is foreseen in the provisional measure for the reform of the electricity sector.

“We sent a second topic of the electricity sector reform, which is the freedom for all consumers to choose, as in most of the world, from whom to choose their electricity. This represents, according to data from the electricity sector, a 22% reduction, now there is the possibility of a 26% lower tariff by December 2027,” said the minister in a press interview after an event at the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

According to the minister, the reform of the electricity sector "has a very strong social character." The head of the ministry said that the government intends to "sensitize Congress" to establish the joint committee for the provisional measure on the electricity sector and move the text forward in the legislature.

In April, the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) sent the proposal for reform of the electricity sector to the Civil House this Wednesday (April 16). The proposal is based on three pillars:

Axis 1 – Tariff Justice

The first priority of the reform is to promote tariff fairness, ensuring that all consumers have effective access to electricity. The measures improve the Social Tariff and create the Social Discount for Electricity, reducing the impact of energy bills on the budgets of thousands of families.

Axis 2 – Freedom for the Consumer

The second pillar is freedom for the consumer, who will have greater autonomy in choosing suppliers and contracting energy – including the possibility of choosing the type of energy source.

This change aims to stimulate competition, encourage innovation, and offer more accessible and personalized options, promoting a more dynamic and competitive market.

Axis 3 – Balance for the Sector

Finally, the third pillar seeks to establish a sustainable balance for the electricity sector, promoting security of supply, attracting investment, and integrating renewable energy sources. The proposal also includes mechanisms to guarantee the financial stability of distributors and generators, as well as stimulating operational efficiency.
