The Brazilian economy is accelerating, and the central government's accounts in 2024 will remain within the target tolerance band.

247 - The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, spread rumors about a supposed fiscal risk in Brazil and an imminent economic slowdown, aligning himself with far-right governors who, in recent days, have been complaining and intensifying attacks on President Lula's government.

“The fiscal challenge is gigantic. I am predicting a difficult year. Brazil is not doing well. It is spending too much. It is spending what it shouldn’t be spending,” declared Tarcísio during a meeting with municipal health secretaries at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes this Thursday (23), according to The state of Sao Paulo

"It will have repercussions in terms of inflation. It will have repercussions in interest rate policy. And what will we see? The economy will slow down," he continued. "You will feel this in the municipal participation fund, in Fundeb (Basic Education Maintenance and Development Fund), in ICMS," he said.

Contrary to Tarcísio's claims, the central government's accounts in 2024 remained within the tolerance band of the fiscal target, close to the center of the objective, as reported by the National Treasury. The consolidated fiscal data for 2024 will be officially released by the Treasury only at the end of this month.

Furthermore, contrary to the governor's claims, the Brazilian economy is accelerating, while the fiscal deficit remains close to the center of the target. GDP in the third quarter of 2024 registered growth of 4% compared to the same period in 2023.
