Ilan Goldfajn, the first Brazilian to head the IDB, will replace Mauricio Claver-Carone, the first American to lead the bank, who was removed from the post amid an ethics scandal last month. IDB governors are generally finance ministers or other high-ranking officials from the bank's 48 member countries.

The IDB could be a battleground for a geopolitical dispute over key financing decisions for its members, as Latin America grapples with both boom and bust.

Besides Brazil, four other countries – Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, and Chile – had candidates nominated for the presidency of the IDB.
