Greek Prime Minister calls for decisive action from the European Union.

"The time has come to act collectively and decisively," Georges Papandreou stated in an interview with a Greek newspaper.

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou called on the European Union (EU) to resolve the debt crisis plaguing Greece and the eurozone "collectively and decisively" in an interview with the Greek weekly newspaper Proto Thema.

"The time has come to act collectively and decisively," Papandreou stated. "I am convinced that the EU can and will do so, in order to safely lead Greece and Europe out of the crisis."

Europe promised G-20 members yesterday that the eurozone will present a comprehensive plan to resolve the debt crisis next weekend at the EU leaders' summit in Brussels.

Before the summit, the Greek government is due to vote on October 20 on a new set of austerity measures demanded by the EU and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). "Our fight is to ensure that Greece does not leave the euro and to protect the interests of the overwhelming majority of citizens, for whom it would be a real catastrophe if the country were to declare a default," Papandreou stated.
