Pix contactless payment starts working this Friday.
The maximum value per transaction will be R$ 500. Users can lower the limit per transaction and set a maximum daily value for this Pix payment method.
Wellton Máximo, reporter for Agência Brasil - Financial institutions will begin offering, this Friday (28), another type of Pix transfer that eliminates the need to enter a bank password. The offer of Pix by proximity becomes mandatory, at this moment only for Android phones.
The customer simply taps their cell phone against the card machine and makes the Pix payment using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. For online purchases, the Pix payment will be completed with just one click, without the need to scan a QR code or use the Pix Copy and Paste function. The process will be executed within the seller's website.
The maximum amount per transaction will be R$500. Customers can reduce the transaction limit and create a maximum daily amount for this Pix method.
The procedure is similar to that used with credit and debit cards, whose contactless payments have been expanding in the country. In September of last year, 65% of in-person payments were made using contactless payment methods, using cards or other devices, according to the Brazilian Association of Credit Card and Services Companies (Abecs).
Until now, Pix contactless payments were in the testing phase. Among the banks and payment institutions testing the technology are Banco do Brasil, Bradesco, BTG Pactual, Caixa Econômica Federal, C6, Itaú, PicPay, and Santander. A total of 12 point-of-sale terminal brands partnered with Google to extend contactless payments to Pix: Azulzinha, Bin, Cielo, Fiserv, Getnet, Mercado Pago, Pagbank, Rede (owned by Itaú), Safra Pay, Sicredi, Stone, and Sumup.
With the mandatory offering, all financial institutions associated with open finance, which involves data sharing, will have to be on Google Pay (Google's digital wallet) and offer Pix contactless payments. This is because, currently, only Google Pay is registered with the Central Bank (BC) as a payment initiator.
Since Apple Pay and Samsung Pay are not registered with the Central Bank, contactless Pix will only be available on Android mobile devices that use Google Pay. At least two banks, Bradesco and Banco do Brasil, offer the technology within their apps. Other banks are expected to offer the functionality in their apps starting this Friday.
