Petrobras announced this Thursday (26) a reduction in the price of diesel at refineries by an average of 5,1%, and of gasoline by an average of 1,4%. The new values will start to be applied tomorrow (27).
The reduction in refinery prices will not necessarily reach consumers because Brazilian law guarantees price freedom in the fuel and derivatives market. "This will depend on markups made by other members of the fuel supply chain, especially distributors and service stations," Petrobras reported.
According to the company's calculations, if the adjustment is passed on in full and there are no changes in the other components that make up the final consumer price, diesel could fall by 2,6%, or about R$ 0,08 per liter on average, and gasoline by 0,4%, or R$ 0,02 per liter on average.
Price policy
The changes announced today follow the state-owned company's pricing policy released in October 2016. The company reaffirmed its intention to review prices at least once every 30 days, a policy that provides "the necessary flexibility to deal with highly volatile variables."
According to Petrobras, the new prices maintain a positive margin in relation to international parity. The changes are a result of the appreciation of the real since the last price review, adjustments to Petrobras' competitiveness in the domestic market, and the reduction in the prices of refined products in international markets, particularly diesel, which saw an increase in stocks due to a less severe winter than expected in the Northern Hemisphere, according to the state-owned company.
