Odebrecht admits to committing a crime in the US.

Odebrecht acknowledged that it committed at least two types of crime in the United States: obstruction of justice, with destruction of evidence, and attempted bribery of a high-ranking official in Antigua, according to a document from the Department of Justice of that country; in addition, the company admitted to paying bribes to win new business, the company acknowledged; the crimes committed in American territory were revealed this Wednesday (21), when Odebrecht closed agreements with the US and Switzerland to end ongoing proceedings and others that would be opened.

Furthermore, the company admitted to paying bribes to win new business, the company acknowledged. The crimes committed in American territory were revealed this Wednesday (21), when Odebrecht reached agreements with the US and Switzerland to end ongoing proceedings and others that would be opened.

"According to the agreements reached with Brazil, the US, and Switzerland, the group will pay a fine of R$ 6,9 billion, the largest in the world. Brazil will receive R$ 5,3 billion, and the remainder will be divided equally between the US and Switzerland."

Odebrecht hired a lobbyist in Miami with the goal of bribing the Prime Minister of Antigua, Gaston Browne, and preventing authorities there from sending documents proving that the company was a partner in a bank on the Caribbean island, Meinl Bank, which had been used to pay bribes.

Lobbyist James Caswey asked for US$4 million, but Odebrecht only paid €1 million, in three installments, according to documents from US authorities. The prime minister even met with Odebrecht executives, but did not accept the proposal, according to whistleblowers.

The attempted bribery case in Antigua was revealed in this Wednesday's edition (21) by "O Estado de S. Paulo".

The crimes were committed in mid-2015 in Miami, where Odebrecht maintains a number of businesses, by two employees of the group whose identities are not being revealed by the Americans.
