Brazil Agency – The "Minha Casa, Minha Vida" program is expected to contract 2 million housing units by 2026. The government has resumed contracting with some changes to the program, including adjustments to the subsidy ceiling and income bracket.

In the case of band 1, the group that includes families with the lowest income, the eligible monthly income increased from R$ 1,8 to R$ 2,64. In band 2, the limit was raised to R$ 4,4, and in band 3 to R$ 8.

In interview with the program The Voice of BrazilThe Minister of Cities, Jader Filho, explained that the change will allow the benefit to be extended to a larger number of families in accordance with the adjustment of the minimum wage.

Jader Filho also said that the financed properties must be located near urban centers, so that residents have access to a health center and school, for example.

According to Jader Filho, the target of 2 million housing units will be distributed based on the housing deficit in the regions and states.

Grants

The government increased the subsidy limits for housing under the program, reaching R$170 for housing units in cities, operated with Social Leasing and Social Development funds; R$75 in rural areas, operated with federal funds; and R$40 for improvements to units located in rural areas, with federal funds.

The subsidy is the portion of the funding paid by the government using resources from the Union and other funds.

The ceiling can be increased if a solar energy system is installed or the property is converted for residential use.

Resumption of works

According to the minister, construction has resumed on more than 11 housing units, and approximately 9 more are expected to be delivered by the end of April.

“When we arrived, we had 186 active contracts. Of those 186, 83 units were stalled. We worked through various ordinances and dialogues with municipal and state entities, and we managed to restart more than 11 projects that had been stalled. Projects that had been stopped for more than 10 years,” he said.

According to the minister, six thousand families have received housing so far. "People who live in rented accommodation, those experiencing homelessness, and those in at-risk areas are in a hurry," he emphasized.
