Hours after Temer signs decree, Parente rushes to Petrobras to avoid paying environmental fines.

Just hours after Michel Temer signed a decree authorizing that up to 60% of the fines for environmental crimes can be offset through the provision of services, Petrobras, led by Pedro Parente, signed a letter of intent with IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) to adhere to the new environmental regulations; after selling off pre-salt oil reserves at bargain-basement prices and eliminating national participation in the production of machinery and equipment for the sector, Parente is now also attacking the environment.

Reuters Petrobras announced on Saturday that it signed a letter of intent with Ibama to adhere to the rules of the decree signed by President Michel Temer, which allows the conversion of fines imposed by the agency into environmental services.

"This measure avoids litigation and legal disputes; it's a modern and well-targeted tool for the application of environmental resources," the company said in a statement.

Petrobras will still assess the final amount that the company will apply upon adhering to the rules of the decree, it added.
