Haddad criticizes the possibility of US surcharges on Brazilian products: "It makes absolutely no sense."
Trump's surcharge on other countries could benefit Brazilian exports, says the Finance Minister.
247 - Finance Minister Fernando Haddad (PT) said that it “makes no sense” for the United States to impose surcharges on Brazilian products, highlighting that the trade balance between the two countries is currently balanced. The statements were made in an interview with RedeTV, recorded this Thursday (30).
According to InfoMoneyCiting Estadão Conteúdo, Haddad argued that if Washington decides to increase tariffs on imports from other countries, Brazil could benefit, increasing its share of the US market. However, the minister stressed the need for caution, as there has not yet been a detailed official announcement from Donald Trump.
Another point highlighted by the minister was the impact of Trump's decision to reduce subsidies for the energy transition. According to Haddad, this change has led investors, who previously planned to invest their resources in the US, to seek opportunities in Brazil. "There are now investors looking to BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) to do business here. We have an incredible competitive advantage in terms of cheap energy production," he said.
The minister's statement reinforces the government's perception that Brazil can become a more attractive destination for renewable energy investments, especially given the political and economic uncertainties in the United States. The country has established itself as one of the leaders in clean energy production, with sources such as hydroelectric, wind, and solar playing an increasingly important role on the global stage.
Haddad's stance comes at a time of growing global trade tensions, with the US evaluating protectionist measures that could affect several emerging economies.
